At Pure in August 2010, a seminar on trends was presented by Lorna Hall from WGSN. We received an exciting glimpse into what WGSN have forecasted to be the hot looks for Spring/Summer 2011.
These were broken down into macro trends called “Timelines”, “Fair and square” and “Sensory”. Each trend holds a different feel so there should be something for everyone!

Timelines was presented with a sense that our society want to move forward and embrace new technology yet still wanting to keep a heritage feel close to their hearts.
WGSN’s Timeline trend had been inspired by men’s cavalry and heirlooms but with a modern twist. Folded shapes, soft leathers and statement necklines are key in womenswear for next season.

For accessories, hard case clutches that we have seen by Alexander McQueen are now the trend along with statement necklaces that have a museum quality.

For casual wear and young fashion the focus is on worn out pieces that look as if they have been destroyed with a grungy appeal. Tie dyes, frayed edging and fading materials are what to look out for.

This trend also holds a sporty, ballet element to it. Featuring slouched jogging pants with layering and high shine accessories for a mix n match look.

White is also a key colour for Spring/Summer 2011 and mixing white with cream for a fresh and feminine look.

Gladiator styled footwear is still high on trend but has been toned down by the use of soft fastenings and the idea of wrapping instead of hard-edged buckles.

Fair & Square is the second Macro trend forecasted by WGSN. This trend is about the simple things in life that make us humble, bringing rural elements into an urban world to make things look prettier yet clean. This trend has a bohemian edge inspired by Laura Ashley print archive and patchworks.

Think feminine tailoring and pin tuck details along with 1940’s inspired silhouettes. Wide cut, high waisted trousers and culottes will be on trend paired with soft blouses.

Floral prints have been big in past seasons and this has been carried through to Spring/Summer 2011. Again white will be a key colour to keep the season fresh.

For bags think decorative quilting and bohemian crafts.

If this trend is not for you, Fair and Square also hold another dimension to the trend. This is about more simple, clean block shapes that are very anti bodycon.

Summer sporty basics are inspired by architecture and interior design. Peachy nude tones, clean blue grey, silver and white are key colours for this block basic trend with flashes of orange-infused reds.

Key pieces of the season are jersey tank tops, shorts, multi length detailing and sporty separates.

The last Macro trend is called Sensory. This is a high summer story, full of colour and print. Prints for S/S 2011 can be either digital or marble with sheer paneling and over lays. Bodycon pants and bellowing tops create a contrasting silhouette for the summer. The “A twist” t-shirt has predicted to be a top seller. The t-shirt has been reinvented, so twisting and draping are key details with this trend for jersey.

For a more youthful look, the Playsuit has been updated by being cinched in from under the bust. Tribal color and prints are bold and full of vibrant energy. The brand Traffic People have designed some amazing prints for their Playsuits and Maxi dresses so they would be a good brand to watch out for if this trend appeals to you.
