This past weekend I found myself in the Empire State that is New York city. I’ve been a regular visitor to New York since I was 14 years old but no matter how many times I’ve been since then the city always seems new to me.
Walking through Times Square never gets old, seeing the lights, eating a slice or heading downtown to Brooklyn is thrilling to me and I truly soak it in as I love the experiences and feeling the city gives me. They say NY is the city that never sleeps and it’s true but it’s also a city that just feels alive. People are constantly moving!
It’s easy to get sucked into that, but as an English kid in America I have the chance to relax, observe, snap up the city and watch it go by.

New York is one of the fashion capitals of the world and I was hoping to get my satorialist in the city on but the cold and rain hampered my plans. I did manage to capture this pair though. I love this lady’s scarf, it gives her whole outfit emphasis. I spent about an hour in Harlem looking at walls of Kenti cloth for a scarf I’m working on, so im drawn to the detail at the bottom of hers.

A duffle coat is a must for the winter and indeed late March due to the very unpredictable weather. I love the big wooden toggles on duffle coat’s. This guy’s outfit just seemed to blend which is why I took a picture.

The main reason I was in the city was for “academic research.” I’m in the process of writing my final year dissertation, which believe it or not is on Sneaker Culture! Part of my research involves an ethnography of sneaker heads so I headed Uptown to do a few interviews. I was fortunate enough to interview the staff at Atmos in New York City and also Maze Lopez from KixandtheCity.com.

I shot the interview in West NYC which is a really nice sneaker and clothing boutique on 72nd street. Shout out to Roger and Raymond who already follow WeAreHQ!
No trip to New York is complete without grabbing a bite to eat and while I was in Harlem I went to the Queen Of Soul Food – Sylvia’s Restaurant. One of the things I will miss when I return home is the portions of the food out here – American’s really give you your money’s worth and while it may be to some people’s detriment, I for one enjoy feeling fed!
My choice of entree has to be the Smothered Chicken and Waffles with a side of Greens and Macaronni and Cheese. TRUST! Also don’t be afraid to take advantage of the free basket’s of Cornbread that are refilled on your table.

Many thanks to Gypsy and Mike at Atmos on 125th Street. Maze from KixandtheCity.com, Roger and Raymond at West NYC and the staff and chef at Sylvia’s in Harlem for taking my hunger away.
