The Result Of Using A Basic Film Camera

After living in Malaysia for a year, and having not done much photography as what I did in London, I decided it was about time to dust off my trusty camera and put together a photo shoot.

The first idea was to collaborate with a fellow photographer. After not being able to find anyone, I decided to go it alone, and round up some assistants and a model. The inspiration for the shoot came from flicking through numerous pages of Vogue magazines and fashion sites like The Sartorialist and various other web sites related to street fashion.

I actually used the street behind my house as the location for my photo shoot. The model, a friend of mine who was thankfully able to with stand the scorching mid-afternoon heat with the sun hovering directly over us. The styling and make-up was also done by me. My photographs were taken using my Vivitar film camera which I bought in London and cost me next to nothing. I shot using Kodak Gold 200 Film, and for the black and white photograph’s I used Neopan black and white film by Fujifilm.

I developed a love for film when I first studied photography three years ago. I find shooting with film much more exciting than digital.  There’s that element of anxiousness and excitement when you go to pick up the photographs once they’ve been developed- you have no idea what they’re going to look like. They could either be too over-exposed, too under-exposed or just absolutely perfect…..and hence the result of using a basic film camera and my first attempt at fashion photography.
