I was invited last week by Nike to come and view a private screening of a new documentary about Brazil. I got the press release about this and posted up a little something about it too.

The event was held at the Richmix in East London. Arriving at the venue I see familiar faces such as Phoebe Lovatt, Gary Warnett, Acyde, Luke Monaghan and my cousin Tarik Fontenelle. Treated with free pop corn which Phoebe wanted all flavours… greedy thing! ![]()

As if we were 13 years old again, we all sat at the back row and giggled and threw pop corn at eachother until the lights went out and the feature started!
Understanding that the hour long piece was going to be about Brazilian culture and nothing else was quite an interesting angle. At the same time, I was watching it thinking “when is the Nike plug coming in”. I didnt really know much else about it… and I wanted to keep it that way for it to capture me with a free mind…

Darren Bartlett, the creator of the film was told to capture the Brazil and its people and cultures. It started by us getting a full description of how kites are a huge part of the Brazilian youth and I must say I was quite confused to start off with, but as it progressed through, I saw how they were able to relate the freedom of flying a kite, to the freedom of playing football.. it was quite an interesting way of bringing the two together. Moving on to dance, carnival, food, capoeira, music and of course football. Almost the entire film was in Brazilian and in parts was dragging on a bit and the continued out of focus/in to focus transitions throughout the whole film was starting to give me a bit of a headache, but as the film progressed I was learning so much about the Brazilian people and the history of the country and how corrupt the country was/is and how football was the only escape for most of them.
As I said previously, I thought that the movie was going to be an obvious Nike plug but I was pleasantly surprised that there was not one piece of “Nike” branding withing the entire movie.. but what it did show me was the relation between Brazil and football and when you think of the two together, you think of Pele, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Nike… or something close…
After the movie there was food and drinks at the redesigned 1948 energy space. TONS of people there and most of them freeloaders that knew nothing about the event and just came because Nike was holding a party and that there would be free drinks and food there…

Finally got to see the Black Brazil pack that is said to be very limited edition… that was pretty cool.. but in all honesty, I wanted to go and watch the movie again and see what bits I may have missed…
Shout out to Nikestadiums.com and to Simon for the invite.
