Cameras, Cameras and more Cameras! Here at WeAreHQ, we love photography and it doesnt really get better than this. Recently we were invited up to the Leica store, Mayfair to check out the brand new Leica S2 camera that is set to take over the game.
With cameras like the Nikon D3x, Canon 1D Mk IV and even the Sony A900, Full Frame Digital SLRs are everywhere, but with the introduction to a camera that is in a complete league of its own, its a huge step in the photography evolution. Of course ,Leica is known for their M system cameras and their optics range, but this is something new and very special.
Holding the camera was quite a task, as its a quite a big system, but no doubt it is a system with total control. The auto-focus speed is slightly slower than the top full frame DSLRs, because of the larger glass that it has to move, but faster than any other medium format camera today. The ISO has also been improved HUGELY compared to other medium formats which dont usually go over 100-200 ISO, while the S2 is excellent at 320 and still good at 640. So what some may see as negatives, are actually improvements beyond our imagination. If you compare this camera to any other in its “league”, its miles ahead.
Let us go through the huge array of other positives:
- 37.5 MPX
- 30 x 45mm CCD Sensor (60% larger than ANY Full frame DSLR or 35mm Camera)
- Image Sensor created especially for them by Kodak
- Weatherproof – The S2 and all S lenses are extensively weatherproofed and can withstand exposure to rain and dust. The S2 can also be supplied with a highly scratch-resistant LEICA S2-P sapphire glass display cover for the most extreme and demanding conditions.
- Image quailty that cannot be matched – The detailing and sharpness was incomparable. Many photographers have problems taking pictures of solid black subjects (ie. clothing, shoes etc) without pixel noise coming up, the S2 deals with it better than any other camera on the market.
- Incredible build and extremely rugged
- ITS HANDHELD! You can use this camera so freely without a tripod and its something that hasnt been seen/done before with such precision.

The Leica S2 system is now taking orders with the price range hitting you at an outstanding £15,996 from selected authorised dealers and the official Leica Store in Mayfair. There is also another option of £19,092, the LEICA S2-P with sapphire display includes the Platinum service package. Lenses start from £3000 and go to around £5000.
