British designer, Alexander McQueen has sadly passed away in London at the age of 40, just days after the passing of his mother. It is believed that the designer took his own life.
McQueen was due to showcase his Fall/Winter 2010 collections in early March at Paris Fashion Week, which would then continue in London. Some adding that his death will cast a pall on the usually ebullient collections.
The windows of the Alexander McQueen store in New York have been covered in preparation for a tribute.
McQueen was very much an influential designer within the fashion industry, known for his tendentious designs and shock tactics. Rihanna, Bjork and Lady Gaga were among the many privileged celebrities to wear his creations.
He also met with critical acclaim and earned the British Designer of the Year award four times, being one of the youngest to do so.
He was of course a visionary, and will continue to be an inspiration to generations of designers.
The pictures compiled are a retrospective look back at his influence on the fashion industry.
